What Your Broadband Bill Reveals About Whether You're Overpaying for Speed

Broadband bills look simple. One number per month. No usage breakdown, no seasonal variation, no peak and off-peak rates.

But there are three things in that bill, or associated with it, that tell you whether you're overpaying. And for most Australian households who've been on the same NBN plan for more than 12 months, at least one of those three things has drifted out of alignment with the market.


The NBN Market in 2026: Why Drift Happens

NBN plan pricing has moved significantly over the last few years. RSPs (retail service providers) compete aggressively for new broadband customers and regularly adjust their pricing and inclusions. What was a competitive $89/month plan in 2022 may now have a direct equivalent available for $69/month, with the same or better typical evening speeds.

Unlike electricity, there's no government CDR mandate for broadband plan data, but RSPs publish their current plans openly, and the variation between plans at the same speed tier has become substantial. A household on a legacy plan from 2021 or 2022 is paying for the competitive landscape of that moment, not today's.

The drift is invisible if you're not looking. The bill stays the same. The plan stays the same. The market moves past it.

The Three Things Your Bill Tells You

Thing 1: Your Speed Tier, and Whether You're Actually Using It

Your bill will show your plan name or description, which contains the speed tier: NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 100, NBN 250, or NBN 1000 (Gigabit).

The speed tier defines the maximum download and upload speeds available to your connection. It does not define what you're actually experiencing.

The question to ask: When did you choose this speed tier? Did you choose it deliberately because you needed it, or is it what you were put on by default when you connected?

Many Australian households are on NBN 100 (the most common "standard" tier) when their actual usage patterns would be equally well served by NBN 50, at a lower monthly cost. The difference between NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans from most RSPs is typically $10–20 per month, or $120–240 per year.

Conversely, some households are on NBN 25, the entry-level tier, and experiencing genuinely frustrating speeds because their household size or usage intensity has grown. They could be on a faster tier for a modest additional monthly cost that would significantly improve their experience.

How to assess your speed tier appropriateness:

  • Count the number of simultaneous users in your household during peak usage times (typically evenings)
  • For streaming: 4K streaming requires around 25 Mbps per screen. Two 4K screens simultaneously need 50 Mbps real-world bandwidth.
  • For working from home: video calls (Teams, Zoom) need around 3–5 Mbps upload. NBN 25 has a 10 Mbps upload limit that may be adequate for one user, cramped for two.
  • For general use (browsing, social, standard definition streaming): NBN 25 or 50 is typically fine.

Your speed tier should match your household's genuine usage intensity, not be a hedge against vague "what if I need it" scenarios.

Thing 2: Your Monthly Price, and Whether It Includes Everything It Should

Your bill shows the monthly plan cost. But the relevant comparison isn't just your price versus a competitor's headline price. It's your total monthly cost versus the total cost of an alternative that includes the same (or equivalent) inclusions.

What to check for:

Modem/router cost: Are you renting a modem from your RSP? Monthly modem rental fees of $5–10 are common and often invisible after the first few months. A one-off modem purchase (typically $100–200 for a capable NBN-compatible device) amortised over three to four years is cheaper than ongoing rental for most households.

Bundled features: Some plans include features that have genuine value, like static IP addresses for remote work, cybersecurity tools, premium customer support tiers. Check whether you're using or benefiting from the bundled features in your plan. If not, a cheaper plan without them is equivalent for your purposes.

Contract vs month-to-month: Contract plans sometimes offer a lower monthly price in exchange for a 12 or 24-month commitment with exit fees. Month-to-month plans cost slightly more but allow switching freely. If you've been on the same plan for three years and it's still technically month-to-month, there's no exit fee for switching.

Introductory discount status: Some RSPs offer reduced pricing for the first 6 or 12 months, reverting to a higher standard price after the promotional period. Check whether you're on the promotional price or the post-promotional rate.

Thing 3: Your RSP's Typical Evening Speed, Not Their Headline Speed

The headline speed on your plan (NBN 100 = "maximum 100 Mbps download") is the technical ceiling of your connection tier. It's not what you get during peak usage periods.

The ACCC requires RSPs to publish "typical evening speed" data, the average speed delivered during the 7–11pm peak period when the network is under heaviest load. This is the figure that describes your real-world experience.

RSPs vary substantially in their typical evening speed performance even within the same speed tier. An NBN 100 plan from one RSP might deliver 92 Mbps typical evening speed. An NBN 100 plan from another RSP might deliver 78 Mbps. The difference is meaningful for households with high simultaneous usage.

The typical evening speed data for RSPs is published by the ACCC and by independent monitoring services. Check where your RSP sits on the current rankings. If you're on an RSP at the lower end of the typical evening speed table, and paying the same or more as RSPs at the top, you're getting worse performance for equivalent cost.


The Broadband Comparison We Run

The comparison result shows you whether you could get equivalent or better performance at a lower price, or equivalent price with meaningfully better performance. Both are valuable. Speed for less money, or better speed for the same money.


The Four Profiles That Almost Certainly Overpay

Profile 1: The Legacy 100 Customer Connected to NBN 100 in 2020 or 2021 when it was a premium tier. Never reviewed the plan. Now paying $89–99/month for a tier that most RSPs now offer at $69–79/month, and that's available with faster typical evening speeds from competitors at the same price.

Profile 2: The Speed Tier Mismatch A two-person household paying for NBN 100 when their usage (browsing, standard streaming, occasional video calls) is comfortably served by NBN 50 at $20/month less. Or conversely, a four-person household on NBN 25, grinding through peak hours with three simultaneous streams and a video call, who could fix their experience for $15/month more.

Profile 3: The Forgotten Modem Rental Added modem rental at connection time and never thought about it again. $7/month for five years = $420 in modem rental. A modem purchase in month one would have cost $150–180. The math is bad and the bill keeps showing $7 every month invisibly.

Profile 4: The Post-Promo Price Signed up on a 12-month promotional rate, the promo expired, the price reverted, and the new price was accepted without comparison. The promotional market is continuously active, and there are almost always promotional offers available that are better than the post-promo standard price at their RSP.


How to Switch Broadband

Broadband switching is administratively simpler than energy switching. You choose a new RSP, complete the sign-up online (10 minutes), and they manage the network migration. Downtime during the switchover is typically a few hours on the day of migration, usually manageable with scheduling.

The key check: confirm whether you own your modem or it belongs to the current RSP. If you're renting a modem, switching means returning the device and either purchasing one from the new RSP or buying your own.

Month-to-month plans have no exit fee. Contract plans may have an early termination fee, so check the terms before initiating a switch.
